The next day, Peony video-called Gram. “Seeing if you found anything about my mystery?”

“Yeppers.” Gram looked expectant.

“And?”

Gram frowned. “Add your father to the call.”

“He’s busy.”

“Nonsense.” Gram hit buttons on the phone. “My conference button’s not working. Pull in your father.”

Peony hit the plus sign to add his number, and three windows appeared on the screen: Gram, her, Dad and Jane.

“Tony, did my secretary’s package arrive?” Gram jumped right in.

Dad yawned and blinked as if he needed more coffee.

Peony smiled at them and explained the reason for the call. “I was just calling Gram for an update on what she found about the White side of the family for my The Lady and the Flower research.”

Dad nodded. “Got ya. Package arrived the other day. Marked for you.” He turned to Jane. “I thought you drove it over when I left for tee-time?”

Jane shrugged. “Peony will be here Christmas day. She can get her mail then.”

Dad stared at Jane. “You should have given it to her.”

“You were busy with golf, or you could have taken it.” Jane shrugged again. “I didn’t feel up to the drive.” Heavy inuendo lay in her voice.

Were they fighting over the quality of the rental car? Again?

Gram glowered. “I express-sent original documents for a reason. There could be a clue in there for Peony.” She pinched her lips together.

Yeah. Jane should have at least told her she had a package waiting. Or, in all fairness, Gram could have sent the mailer to Peony’s attention care of Sinclair Manor.

Gram adjusted her screen. “Take Peony to dinner and give her what I sent.”

The secretary could email copies. Gram had probably mailed the originals as an excuse to push them all together more so than to provide her with a key to her mystery. Gram was sweet, but some familial relationships were better served by separation, like Peony and Jane’s.

Jane shook her head hard. “Tony and I have ballet tickets tonight. Swan Lake.”

Gram’s face grew big in the frame. She wore an impatient expression. “Did you get Peony a ticket?”

Peony waved her hand at the screen, though her face was beginning to flush. “It’s fine. You and I can come back next summer and see a ballet.”

“Of course, we can, dear.” Gram shifted her gaze. “Have you even taken her to the festival?”

Dad shook his head. “Peony’s art program is important. She needs concentration and focus. She doesn’t need distractions. We’ll take her to lunch Christmas day, give her the package then as Jane said. That way she has a planned interruption for her art.”

“Like I suggested.” Jane’s expression switched from duh to frowny. “Though, you do know she’s attending a student program. You’re talking like she’s creating the Sistine Chapel.” Jane turned to Dad. “Is that why we are waiting? So Peony’s not sidetracked? We should share our news.”

“Peony doesn’t need distractions,” Dad said, his voice firmer as he repeated his opinion.

To be fair, her canvas had been blank when he’d visited.

Jane frowned. “I wouldn’t call our news a distraction.
